Lake Murray History

 

Lake Murray is a 50,000 acre playground for the outdoor enthusiast. You can boat, swim, fish, camp, ski, jet ski, tube, canoe, sail and more. Living on the lake is wonderful! You will find condos, patio homes, single family homes and estates all on Lake Murray. With 540 miles of shoreline you can find your weekender or the exclusive community you have wanted to reside in.

Facts:

  • the lake was named after an engineer from New York- William S. Murray

  • the lake is 14 miles wide and 41 miles long at it's widest point

  • it's deepest point is about 190 feet and that is at the dam

  • 64 islands are found at the lake

  • 763 billion gallons of water is what it can hold

  • the dam covers 99 acres, in 1 1/2 miles (Hwy 6) and is 208 feet high ( the old section)

  • to build the lake around 5,000 people were relocated

  • 3 churches, 6 schools, and 194 graveyards were submerged or forced to move

  • the lake covers 50,000 acres of land
